Our selection for June is a Pride month spectacular that is a FULL departure from the tough guy flicks we’ve been cranking through lately. DANDY DUST was never theatrically released outside of a handful of queer film festivals in ’98. This psychedelic fever dream by Austrian trans director A Heins Scheirl employs 16mm to capture some of the most insane zero budget art school wizardry you’ve ever seen. The dreamlike aesthetic is reminiscent of former TNT selection ROLLER BLADE (1996), which also features spooky topless nuns with very unique footwear…. but this film is decidedly more transgressive. This online synopsis of the plot does way better than I could to describe the queer/sci-fi narrative: “Dust, a split-personality cyborg of fluid gender, zooms through time and space in search of his/her own memories and a sense of understanding. S/he travels from the Planet of White Dust where war is constant, to the Planet of Blood and Swelling, a hybrid of his/her father’s body.” Strap on and strap in for this one, this is a mind-blowing ride you’ll never forget, a true example of absolutely lawless filmmaking. And as always be sure to grab an adult beverage at the award winning bar of the best little theatre in town.
