Filmmaker Lotte Reiniger was a German film director and the foremost pioneer of silhouette animation. Lotte self described herself as a “primitive caveman artist”. Lotte worked continuusly on films from her silent shorts in the early 20′s to the late 1970′s. Reiniger pioneering stlye relied on thousands of photos of paper cut-out silhouettes arranged to tell a story. It was a painstaking process that involved moving paper characters ever so slightly and snapping a photo of each movement.
