Matt Zoller Seitz & Odie Henderson Present: SHAFT

The late Richard Roundtree made his film debut as the iconic private dick John Shaft who, according to his Oscar-winning theme song, is “a bad mother-shut yo’ mouth!” Director Gordon Parks’ adaptation of Ernest Tidyman’s detective novel (with a script by the author) is the epitome of Black cool and a snapshot of a rapidly declining ‘70s-era New York City. Can you dig it?

There will be a book signing/talk accompanied with this film.

The new book “Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras: A History of Blaxploitation Cinema” will be available for sale in the lobby.
