Just in time for back to school we’ve got a real sweet treat from the back end of the Vestron Pictures catalog, CLASS OF 1999. Directed by Mark Lester (Commando, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Firestarter, Roller Boogie) this pseudo-sequel to Lester’s Class of 1984 features genre greats Malcolm McDowell, Pam Grier, Stacy Keach and John Ryan as well as TNT faves Billy Drago and Joshua John Miller (Richie from Teen Witch!).
In the dystopian future of 1999 youth gangs and their rampant violence have caused the constitution and private businesses to be abolished…. but kids still go to school..?? What’s left of America has “free fire zones” where police have no jurisdiction. The CIA’s Department of Education Defense is in charge and as a result there is experimental military meddling at Kennedy High School in Seattle. Don’t sweat the backdrop details too much, this movie is a gritty action genre icon with vibes perfectly nestled between the new wave 80s and neon 90s. There are some pretty raw and intense emotional scenes as our (anti)hero Cody Culp fights to expose the truth and to protect his chosen family in the face of cold-blooded imperial profiteering….
