The title of “wildest Hong Kong director” is one of great contention, but between his Indiana Jones spoofing sci-fi action epic The Seventh Curse, his ultra-violent prison abolition parable Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky, his rubber suit softcore flick Erotic Ghost Story, Ngai Choi Lam might just earn that honorific. The capstone of his career, however, is one of the great crown jewels of psychotronic Hong Kong cinema and might just be the wildest of all his films: 1992’s THE CAT. THE CAT finds the director tackling some of his most ludicrous material yet, following a cat from outer space who has to team up with a young girl to stop a bloodthirsty alien who has also found its way to Earth. Featuring several of the most inventive and unique action set pieces ever committed to celluloid, THE CAT is the sci-f/action/comedy hybrid you didn’t know you needed in your life and is one of the greatest movies to see with a crowd.
