Jacob Metcalf, Leoncarlo, Gregory Uhlmann Live Behind the Screen at Texas Theatre April 1st, 2017
Jacob Metcalf returns to Dallas at Texas Theatrebefore the west coast leg of his North American Solo tour, playing host to two of his favorite emerging songwriters and composers– Leoncarlo of Denton andGregory Uhlmann of Los Angeles. Jacob will preface his introduction of the two special guests with anecdotes from the road, including ghost stories and tales of Canadian border crossing adventures along with a solo set of his own songs.
Metcalf’s debut album Fjord (2016) received pleasant responses from the international press community and music lovers alike for its breathtaking collection of art-folk compositions, ranging from wistful, unhurried ballads to swirling, majestic orchestrations, sometimes within the same song, and all set to Metcalf’s inviting vocals and non-linear story-telling.
The material for Fjord was pulled from hand-scrawled journals written over a decade and spanning five continents (Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America). More recently, Metcalf lived out of his car and inside a four foot crawl space between a vintage store and loft apartments in order to save enough from his day jobs to complete the album. Recorded in Austin, Ft. Worth and Dallas with more than 30 talented musician friends, the singer-songwriter and band saw every dive, theater and city street as the ideal stage to prep the songs before further dressing the arrangements in the studio.
Metcalf was nominated for several awards including best songwriter, best album, and best live act in the most recent Dallas Observer Music Awards.
“Metcalf’s solo debut is exquisite, its beauty both on the surface and further down — his reedy, emotive voice rests atop intricate instrumentation, full of flickering strings, plucked guitars and dry percussion — making songs like the gorgeous title track or Ein Berliner lodge firmly in the mind.” Preston Jones, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Experimental composer Leoncarlo Canlas has established his solo act as a must-see one man tour-de-force. Armed only with a violin and a few pedals, he delivers his unique sound by incorporating modern production mentalities into centuries-old wooden instruments to create lush symphonic soundscapes in realtime. He is a frequent guest lecturer at TEDx conferences, has played with many area symphony orchestras, and was a guest contributor on Metcalf’s album Fjord.
“Hey, Hollywood: I’ve found your next score composer — although, really, the harmonious and cinematic soundscapes on Leoncarlo’s new record do a pretty good job at painting a picture on their own. They’re just breathtakingly beautiful. Fellow local fiddler (and film score composer) Daniel Hart would be proud.” Culture-Hype
Gregory Uhlmann is a guitarist, improviser, composer, and songwriter based in Los Angeles.
“Uhlmann’s solo debut is “It’s Not Your Fault,” a rapturous chamber-pop gem” BuzzBands.LA
